Will this impact the textbook bill?
The book bill impact will be very minimal. We are removing text books from the bill and putting a cost on for the devices. There will still be some fees for subjects such as art, PE, PLTW, Science, AP, Band, etc. We will not be able to stop all costs due to consumables such as workbooks. The teachers are evaluating the book bills in April and looking at what is a need not a want.
What happens if my child’s device is damaged or lost?
Each child will be charged a fee for insurance. We are purchasing cases that will help prevent damage from dropping. Normal damage/loss will be covered under the insurance…dropping etc and may have a deductible. We are still reviewing this and a final answer will be done soon.
How were the devices paid for? Will all grades receive a device?
We were able to pay for the devices for 7-12 with savings from debt service and capital projects. We hope to obtain a grant to help support the devices in 3-6, however if we do not receive a grant we will pay for the devices from capital projects and textbook funds. Due to budgeting, we hope to have K-2 devices in their hands by second semester. We may be able to do earlier if a few grants come our way.
Will the textbooks be on the devices?
No, the textbooks will not be on the devices. That would take up too much memory. Many of the textbooks are available on the web and students can access from home if they have internet access. Textbooks will be available if a student does not have this access or the book not available on line. We will be using a blended method and we will not always have the normal chapter to chapter method, but lessons are standard based.
Currently, my child carries a 20 pound backpack to school, will they have to carry two?
In no way should your child be carrying all their books home nightly. Books are available online and students should be able to access them or in most situations just use MBC. Students do not need to get an additional backpack. High school devices will be expected to be carried in a case.
When will be bookless?
There is no correct answer for this. I love still reading a good book and I believe that for the younger students we will still need to use the “reading book” for a while.
When will my child receive their device?
The devices will be distributed several different evenings in July. Parents will be expected to attend the session with their child and pay the insurance fee prior to distribution. Cases will be provided the same night. There will be a short in-service on care of the device and basic usage. Depending on the arrival date this summer of the elementary devices it could be August before we are ready to disperse.
Will my child have an email address?
Yes, each child in grades 3-12 will be provided an email address. This will be a filtered email. Grades 3-8 will only have internal email. Grades 9-12 would have access to outside emails.
My child goes to SCC, can he leave his laptop in his locker?
Your child may lock their laptop in the locker. We still need to see how SCC feels about this. The Career Center is NOT wireless.
In the future are you going to use docking stations?
We do not have plans to add docking stations at this time.
Will the students take the laptops/ IPads home?
Yes the students will be able to use the devices at home in most grade levels. K-2 will not take them home and grade 3-4 will be done with teacher input.
Can a family member use the device?
Yes, with limitations. Family members cannot access inappropriate material just as the student cannot. Younger siblings should be monitored as the student is still responsible for damage.
How can a child do work on MBC or other sites if they do not have internet at home?
Most things can be downloaded on the device at school. Also, many places in town have wireless access such as library or restaurants.
If we already have a laptop/ IPad, is my child able to use their own instead of renting one from school?
No we need the students to have the same device to be able to send apps to the devices, etc. We also do not want the responsibility of a device being damaged at school that does not belong to us.
Can my child download music on their device?
Not sure of the answer yet.
Will my child have to turn in the device at the end of the school year?
Yes, we will collect all devices and reclone them. We will clean them and remove any data, music, pictures, etc. Students will be able to put their items on a “cloud” to save it.
My child takes great care of their device and then you collect it at the end of the year. Can they get the same device back?
In most cases the answer is yes. The devices the 2014-15 Seniors will have to be recycled to the seventh graders of the following year. The type of device is different.
Will my child bring home the device each night?
Students in grades 3-12 will be able to bring the device home nightly. They will complete homework and even email it to teachers if they have internet access. Students that do not have access may email while they are at school. Students will be responsible to charge their device at night. It would be our recommendation that the parents purchase a surge protector that the child uses when charging.
Will my student have access to inappropriate material?
We would love to say no and that remain true in every situation. Does the school have a filtering system? YES. However, the students are more techie than us at times and figure a way around. Students will be held accountable at school for any type of inappropriate misuse of the device. This is no different than what we currently have in place. This device will still be filtered at home.
Will the normal charging of the device work all day at school?
Each student should only charge their device in the evening while they sleep. Students may be able to do some charging during the day, but we will not have enough plugs for everyone so an expectation is charging the device nightly. It is imperative that students only charge the devices at night so the batteries get “use to” only being charged at night and last longer.
Do you have policies in place for dealing with bullying?
The school is currently examining and reevaluating all technology policies. The current law that is in place for bullying will stand with the new policies. These policies will be available soon for review.
